Maxie E. Smith, 74, passed away at 2:20 p.m. Oct. 29, 2014, at Mason Health Care & Rehab, Warsaw. He was born March 13, 1940, in Plymouth, to Sylvester and Myrtle Himes Smith. On July 28, 1962, he married Beverly K. Spangle, who died June 25, 1990. On Sept. 14, 1990, he married Diane Hepler, who survives in Silver Lake. He was a lifetime resident of Kosciusko County. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army July 31, 1963. He was a driver for Horizon Transport, retiring in 2012 after 22 years. He attended Clunette United Methodist church. He loved western movies, puzzles, game and sporting events, and he was a Notre Dame fan. Also surviving are a daughter, Kelly (and spouse Dan) Hale, Silver Lake; a son, Jeff (and spouse Diane) Hathaway, Silver Lake; five grandchildren: Keira (and spouse Zach) Collins, Mentone; Sierra Hale, Warsaw; Jacob and Jason Hathaway, both of North Manchester; Danielle (and spouse James) Childress, Trenton, Ga.; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Steve (and spouse Linda) Smith, Sidney, and Philip (and spouse Laura) Smith, Warsaw. He was preceded by his parents and a sister, Donna Kiser, who died March 28, 2012. Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Nye Youth Cabin, Warsaw, with Pastor Fannie Hale officiating.
