Masterworks

Editor, Times-Union:
The announcement earlier this year that Masterworks would be leaving our community left me with the feeling that we would no longer have the excellent quality of music which Masterworks shared with us each summer. However this was abruptly changed on Friday evening, November 20, at the program presented by the Grace College Community Wind Ensemble under the superb direction of Martin Becker. The title of the program was “The End of World War II.” There are 71 members in the ensemble, 35 of which reside outside our community.
Seven World War II veterans were asked to come to the front at which time the announcer gave a brief description of each veteran’s branch he served in and a few details. Four of the vets served in the Navy.
In addition to the outstanding music, the program featured four letters which had been written by service members while on duty to their families. These were read by four narrators while visuals were seen on the screen.
Throughout the program, our favorite announcer, Larry Peppel, provided just the right information. The event was absolutely perfect for a suitable reminder of the really first world war.
