NORTH MANCHESTER - Mary Markowicz, 96, of North Manchester, and formerly of Gary and Hobart, died at 5 a.m. Jan. 26, 2010, in Peabody Healthcare Center, North Manchester.
She was born April 22, 1913, in Gary, to Stephen and Helen Dutkanych Demchak. On May 2, 1942, she married Paul Markowicz, who died Jan. 11, 1982.
She was a homemaker; a graduate of Froebel High School, Gary; and a member of Protection of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Church, Merrillville.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Chrastil, North Manchester, and Barbara (and spouse John) Canada, Montrose, Colo.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday (CST) at Protection of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Church, 8600 Grand Blvd., Merrillville, with Father Peter Bodnar officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Orthodox Cemetery, Gary.
Calling is from 4 to 7 p.m. (EST) Friday at McKee Mortuary, North Manchester, and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.
