SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Mary Ellen Shock, of Gilbert, Ariz., died Feb. 24, 2011, after losing a three-year battle with ovarian cancer.

She was born in 1928, in Wabash County, to Albert and Hazel Schipper. She married Richard Shock, who died in 1983.

She moved to Arizona in 1951, with her husband and two children. After her third child was born in Phoenix, the family moved to Tempe, where she lived for more than 51 years. She was a member of Lions International for 25 years and president of the Tempe Lions Club for 14 years. She was the proud recipient of the Lions International Melvin Jones Service Award, and with her leadership hundreds of Tempe School students received new eye glasses each year. She graduated from Laketon High School in 1946.

She worked at Allied Printing, Phoenix, for 14 years, then Gila River Products, Chandler, for 13 years. She was a member of the American Baptist Church of Tempe for 45 years and the Salvation Army Women's Ministries.

Surviving are a brother, Leon (and spouse Betty) Schipper, Akron; a son, Steven (and spouse Lenna) Shock, Pittsburgh, Pa.; a daughter, JoEllen (and spouse Keith) Brock, Sherman, Texas; five grandchildren: Michelle (and spouse Chris) Sabo and Joe Cascante, all of Mesa, Ariz.; Nicole (and spouse John) Phiri, Brentwood, Pa.; Amy (and spouse Chris) Moser, Corapolis, Pa.; and Nathan Shrock, Thornton, Colo.; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Paul Salyer, Warsaw; and two sisters-in-law, Patty Schipper, Wabash, and Evelyn Schipper, formerly of Akron. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael, who died in 2001; two sisters, Betty (and spouse Cecil) Kotterman, who died in 2008; Darlene Salyer, who died in 1997; and four brothers: James Schipper, who died in 2003; Albert Schipper Jr., who died in 1985; and Roy and Gary Schipper, who both died in 1995.

Services will be from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Friday at Green Acres Mortuary & Cemetery, 401 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale, Ariz.
