Martin Haisma, 78, of Warsaw, died at 9:07 p.m. Dec. 1, 2009, in Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw.
He was born July 10, 1931, in Ouethaske, Friesland, Netherlands, to Jacob and Winifred DeYoung Haisma. On Oct. 27, 1967, in Harvey, Ill., he married Dolores Wilfinger, who survives.
He entered the U.S. Army June 2, 1952, in Chicago, Ill., serving during the Korean War as a translator while stationed in Germany. On May 12, 1954, he was honorably discharged at Fort Sheridan, Ill., as Cpl. Martin Haisma. He moved to Warsaw from Oak Forest, Ill., in 1992. He was a truck driver for Best Trucking for 25 years. He was a member of Veterans Of Foreign Wars Post 3564, Dolton, Ill.; Teamster Union 705; and the Senior Bowling League, Warsaw.
Also surviving are three daughters: Josie (and spouse Tim) Hoy, Bloomington, Ill.; Janice (and spouse Dan) Lamendola, Dallas, Texas; and Jennifer (and spouse Chuck) Babec, Plainfield, Ill.; a son, Martin (and spouse Becky) Haisma, Hermosa Beach, Calif.; nine grandchildren; two sisters, Louise Vandermeer, DeMott, and Clara Vanderveer, Canada; and a brother, Bert Haisma, Cicero. He was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw, officiated by the Rev. Doug West, chaplain of Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw, with military honors by members of Warsaw American Legion Post 49 and VFW Post 1126.
