AKRON - Martha Whitaker, 92, of 260 E. Main, Liberty Mills, North Manchester, and beloved mother passed away at 6:30 a.m. March 12, 2010, in her son's residence in Pittsboro.
She was born June 4, 1917, in Mills Branch, Ky., to Mort and Mollie Howard Shepherd. On Nov. 16, 1935, in Kentucky, she married Lacy Whitaker, who died Feb. 3, 2001.
She was a homemaker and worked at Heckman Bindery and Controls Co., North Manchester. She was a member of Sweetwater Assembly of God and attended Akron Church of God and High School Road Church of Christ, Indianapolis. She loved gardening, sewing and was a people lover.
Surviving are five daughters: Alicia (and spouse Jim) Shreve and Nadene (and spouse Gary) Ward, all of Fort Wayne; Norma (and spouse William) Cassaday, Arkansas; Sadie (and spouse Joe) Shafer, Macy; and Darlene Krause, North Palm Beach, Fla.; three sons: William R. (and spouse Janice) Whitaker, Pittsboro; Earl (and spouse Jackie) Whitaker, Warsaw; and Henry C. Whitaker, New Haven; 20 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by six brothers and three sisters.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 305 W. Rochester St., Akron, with Pastor Terry Canfield officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester.
