Martha Lou Shields, 84, of Muncie, passed away peacefully Dec. 7, 2011, in her residence with her daughters at her side.
She was born Feb. 21, 1927, in Jay County, to Everett and Nila Flesher. She married William Thomas Shields, who died in 1985.
She was a 1945 graduate of Muncie Central High School and was a lifelong Muncie resident. She and her husband co-founded TomKen Tool & Engineering in 1960 along with business partner Ken Yount. She continued to own the company after his death and remained active on the board of directors until recently. She was an alumnus of Delta Sigma Sorority, and a member of the Muncie Light Horse Club, American Quarter Horse Association and Lake Webster Lake Association. She enjoyed entertaining family and friends at her summer lake cottage on Webster Lake. She had an extraordinary relationship with her five grandchildren and family members enjoyed her quick wit and advice.
Surviving are two daughters, Randi Jo (and spouse Bruce) Carmichael, Muncie, and Kimberly Ann (and souse Matt) Murdock, Nashville, Tenn.; a sister, Diane (and spouse Mike) Shank; five grandchildren: Brian (and spouse Dana) Carmichael; Julie Carmichael (and spouse Matt) Cline; Scott Carmichael; Kaytea McIntosh (and spouse Ingacio) Moreno Elst and Blake McIntosh, all of Oregon; two great grandchildren, Winston and Cassidy Carmichael: and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Wanda Stanley.
Service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Elm Ridge Funeral Home, 4600 W. Kilgore Ave, Muncie, with Pastor Jim Behrendt, of Eden Church, officiating. Entombment will be in Elm Ridge Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Calling is from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday and one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the funeral home.
