AKRON – For Aaron Engbrecht’s marketing class at Tippecanoe Valley High School, students were assigned to create a flyer and poster to promote Terry Hall’s Body Safety Program. Hall, according to information provided, is a 38-year veteran of the Indianapolis Police Department who has worked the administrative, operations and investigative areas of law enforcement during his career. The program, which addresses the signals and myths of abuse, is Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the TVHS gymnasium. The student in Engbrecht’s class who created the best flyer then got their flyer mass produced, distributed and displayed throughout the Tippecanoe Valley School District. Engbrecht said he gave his students the vital information about Tuesday’s program to create their flyers and posters. Students only had a couple of days to create their flyers. Engbrecht and a couple of other teachers met to decide which flyer would be mass produced. The teachers looked at the different designs from the 20 students in Engbrecht’s one-semester class. Sophomore Kelsey Ball’s design was chosen. “She definitely had the best initial draft, which was pretty good because the class just started,” Engbrecht said of Ball’s flyer. Ball said to create her flyer she used the information Engbrecht provided, and used the Teachers Credit Union logo since TCU is sponsoring the program. The picture she used in her flyer was chosen, she said, because it shows that the program is about stopping abuse. Initially, she used black, orange and purple in her flyer, but to simplify the flyer only black and red is used. “I guess I’m excited,” Ball said of her flyer be chosen to be mass produced to promote the program. “When my parents see it, they’ll be proud of me.” “It’s a good real experience for the classroom,” Engbrecht said. “The fact that Kelsey has succeeded a week or two into the class has brought legitimacy to our classroom.”The other students’ flyers that do not contain any spelling or other errors also will be displayed throughout the community, Engbrecht said, but will not be mass produced. Hall will give his presentations Jan. 17 at each of Valley’s school buildings, a presentation to teachers after school and then a presentation to the public from 7 to 8 p.m. in the TVHS gym. He gives age-appropriate presentations, and talks about “good touch, bad touch” and where to go for help. According to information provided previously by Principal Kirk Doehrmann, The Body Safety Program books a year in advance and has been around since 1983. The program is designed “to empower children without scaring them. It has been approved by hundreds of school systems.” During the program, Hall addresses the signals and myths of abuse. Teachers and parents learn how to handle an incident of abuse. Children should not attend the adult program. Hall spent seven years in the IPD Sex Offense Branch, and was the former director of the “Good Touch Bad Touch Program” for prevention of child abuse and neglect. Hall has attended training at the FBI Academy, and is a certified law enforcement instructor for Indiana. He was named IPD Officer of the Year and also was chosen IPD Investigative Officer of the Year for having the highest arrest and conviction rate for five consecutive years. He also received the local and state Social Services Award for his work with children. In the last 20 years, he has trained more than 40,000 prosecutors, judges and law enforcement officers at the local, state and federal levels in regards to children’s issues. He has been involved with training for universities, law enforcement academies, national judicial conferences, department in-service training and recently was requested to instruct the Department of Human Services employees. He has trained military investigators out of the country. Hall has talked to more than 600,000 people.
