NORTH WEBSTER - The Watershed Foundation (TWF) announced Mariah Roberts, watershed manager, will participate in the 21st Annual Indiana Watershed Leadership Academy (IWLA).
Roberts received a competitive scholarship from the Indiana Lakes Management Society (ILMS) to support her participation in the program, according to a provided news release.
Founded in 2006, the Indiana Watershed Leadership Academy offers technical training and leadership development. Participants include professionals working in water related fields, such as county and state highway department employees, city stormwater managers, county surveyors, planners, and commissioners, civil engineers, extension educators, soil and water conservation district staff and more.
Historically, IWLA has been funded through the IDEM Section 319 Grant Program; however, future funding for the program remains uncertain following cuts announced in early 2025.
As part of IWLA, Roberts will take part in a comprehensive program that includes three in-person workshops, live virtual group sessions and distance learning modules. The curriculum covers both basic and advanced watershed topics, including leadership principles, watershed science, organizational and communication skills, GIS and technology applications, stakeholder engagement techniques, and policy development. Participants also interact with experts and peers from across the state, building practical skills and professional connections.
Upon completion, Roberts will earn a Professional Certificate in Watershed Management.
Participation in IWLA will strengthen Robert’s work with The Watershed Foundation by increasing her technical knowledge, leadership skills and collaboration skills. The program also provides valuable networking opportunities with watershed professionals, helping to grow partnerships that support TWF’s mission and advance local, on-the-ground water quality projects, the release states.
