Margaret Ann “Peg” Shaffer, 92, Kaleva, Mich.; Mexico Beach, Fla.; and Akron, Ind., passed away at 9:55 p.m. Feb. 10, 2014, at Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester. She was born Aug. 17, 1921, in Washington, D.C., to Joseph and Margaret DeForge Manilla. On Feb. 16, 1940, in Baltimore, Md., she married Carl Frederick Shaffer, who preceded her in death July 15, 2006. She lived an active and interesting life. In addition to her love for her family she was an avid walker and outdoors woman. She loved fishing, particularly trout fishing in Michigan and flounder fishing in Florida. Despite being a petite woman, she was a very good amateur horseshoe competitor, having won more than 50 tournaments, often as mixed doubles with her husband, Fred. She was a very good landscape artist, working primary in oils. Her work decorates the walls in the homes of her children and many of her friends. She also loved feeding the birds and working in her garden, and her flowers were always the envy of the neighborhood. She has been often described by family and friends as kind, patient, caring and tough and having a never-give-up attitude. Surviving are nine children: Charlie (and spouse Sharon) Shaffer, Kaleva; Joe (and spouse Barb) Shaffer, Helena, Mont.; Jim (and spouse Maxine) Shaffer, Akron; John (and spouse Marlene) Shaffer, Winter Garden, Fla.; Nancy (and spouse Mike) Sabraski, Minn.; Janet (and spouse Gary) Schumaker, Aurora, Ill.; Cheri (and spouse Brian) Hirn, Saginaw, Mich.; Stephen (and spouse Debra) Shaffer, Warsaw; and Cathy (and spouse Jim) Jacobsen, Ramsey, Minn. She was also preceded in death by a son, Tom Shaffer.
