Mangas Leads Warsaw To Win

Junior scores 18 points in Tigers' 42-35 victory at Manchester

NORTH MANCHESTER – Jake Mangas didn’t really do anything fancy, he just seemed to be in the right place at the right time Thursday night.
With a knack of getting open under the basket, the 6-foot-2 Warsaw junior made the most of his opportunities, converting 8 of 9 field goal attempts and both free throws he shot en route to a game-high 18 points.
Mangas, who also grabbed six rebounds, was the difference for the Tigers, as they overcame shooting woes and ball-handling issues to beat the host Manchester Squires 42-35.
“Jake played well, he shot well,” said Warsaw coach Doug Ogle, whose team improved to 3-2 on the season. “At times, our interior passing was good, but overall our ball-handling was not good. Offensively, we rushed things too many times, and we struggled shooting three-pointers again.”
Warsaw, playing Manchester for the first time since 1976, now leads the overall series 45-16 and won despite a number of unforced turnovers and a 2-of-10 effort from the arc.
Overall, the Tigers were 16 of 34 from the field, but were only 8 of 25 outside of Mangas.
Junior Rashaan Jackson, who was 4 of 9 from the field, added 11 points in the win.
Senior Jordan Stookey scored five points for Warsaw, while senior Nate Pearl and junior Tim Swanson chipped in with three points each.
“They did a good job of breaking us down with dribble penetration,” Manchester coach Eric Thompson, whose team fell to 3-1 on the season, said of Warsaw’s inside game with Mangas and Jackson. “They were a load for us to guard inside.”
The teams were deadlocked at 10-10 after one quarter of play, and then the Tigers led 23-17 at halftime and 31-23 heading into the final frame.
Manchester, which was looking for its first 4-0 start since 1998, cut the deficit to three, 31-28, at the beginning of the fourth quarter with a three-pointer from senior Clayton Petrie and a bucket from junior Cameron Brandenburg.
The Tigers, however, scored the game’s next five points and eventually built their lead to 10 points.
“We learned some things tonight,” said Thompson. “We’re grateful for the opportunity to play Warsaw. Their system is in place, and we’re trying to establish our system. It was good for us to play a program like Warsaw.”
Petrie led the Squires with 17 points, while classmate Claudel Dickantone added 11.
Though the Squires lost, Thompson knows his team is improving.
Manchester hasn’t had a winning season since a 12-10 mark under former coach Gary Goshert in the 2001-2002 campaign.
Thompson is in his third season at the helm of the Squires’ program, winning four games his first season and seven last year.
“I’m proud of where we are,” said Thompson. “We’re improving. I’m not satisfied, but I’m proud of what we’ve done.”
The Squires play at Huntington North Saturday, while the Tigers open Northern Lakes Conference play Dec. 20 by hosting Wawasee.
