Mangas Joins 1,000-Point Club At Hall Of Fame ClassicNEW CASTLE – Kyle Mangas joined what Warsaw coach Doug Ogle called "splendid company."
Lawrence North boys basketball coach Jack Keefer achieved a milestone of his own Friday night.
In the consolation game of the City Securities Hall of Fame Classic at Chrysler Fieldhouse in New Castle, the Class 4A No. 8 Lawrence North Wildcats beat the unranked Tigers 64-47.
Mangas, named to the all-tournament team, scored a game-high 26 points in the loss and became just the 12th player in Warsaw history to score 1,000 career points.
The 73-year-old Keefer became just the fourth high school boys hoops coach in state history to win 750 games, joining Jack Butcher (806), Pat Rady (761) and current Tippecanoe Valley coach Bill Patrick (758).
"I'm happy for Kyle, I really am," said Ogle, whose team fell to 6-4 on the season. "He is a joy to coach, and I think as he joins this elite group that he has just now entered into that he very much deserves to be in that group of guys. He's in splendid company."
A three-pointer by Mangas at the buzzer brought the Tigers within 20-15 after one quarter of play.
Lawrence North (7-2) led 33-24 at halftime and 43-35 at the end of the third quarter.
Warsaw had numerous chances to get even closer, but turnovers and poor ballhandling was the story of the day for the Tigers, who had 12 turnovers in both of their double-digit losses Friday.
Warsaw lost 43-33 to No. 4 New Albany in the semifinals, while Lawrence North fell 53-51 to No. 3 Logansport.
In the consolation contest, Lawrence North turned Warsaw's 12 turnovers into 19 points.
"It was the story of the day," Ogle said of his team's turnover problems. "We're just not to the point yet, against this level of defensive pressure and athleticism. We're just flat out not good enough. We don't have enough guys that can handle the ball. I can't blame it on one person. If you look through the team, the turnovers are pretty well spread out.
"I was worried about this. Honestly, I just knew it was gonna be a real struggle for us to be able to get shots. We've got to make some real strides in our ballhandling and ability to function in a team offense, so that we look like a basketball team. A lot of times we don't look like a basketball team. We don't handle the ball well enough."
Warsaw was 16 of 37 from the field overall, 6 of 20 from three-point range, and 9 of 14 at the free throw line.
Eight of the Tigers' baskets were made by Mangas.
Junior Zach Riley scored six points for Warsaw, while classmate Asher Blum chipped in with five.
For the Wildcats, who were 22 of 50 from the field and 14 of 19 at the charity stripe, Ra Kpedi had a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds. Mike Saunders and Antwaan Cushingberry scored 13 and 11 points, respectively, while Jared Hankins chipped in with nine points.
Keefer, who has coached superstars like Eric Montross and Greg Oden, shrugged off the milestone and acted as if he didn't even know about it.
"I still have fun, I have a passion for it," Keefer said when asked how long he thought he'd keep coaching, and if he thought he could reach Butcher's mark of 806 wins. "My wife is younger than I am, and she'd just give me a list of things to do if I stayed home. I didn't know about the 750, I just try to get the next win."

In their 43-33 semifinal loss to Class 4A state champ and current No. 4 New Albany, the Tigers trailed 12-10 after one quarter of play and 23-17 at halftime.
The Bulldogs stretched the lead to 13 late in the third quarter, but Warsaw was able to trim the deficit to five points late in the fourth quarter.
In a game where both teams struggled mightily from an offensive standpoint, New Albany simply made a few more baskets down the stretch.
The Bulldogs finished the game 14 of 39 (36 percent) from the field overall, 4 of 19 from the arc, and 11 of 18 at the free throw line.
Warsaw was 10 of 37 (27 percent) overall, 1 of 11 from three-point range, and 12 of 14 at the charity stripe.
New Albany star Romeo Langford, whom ESPN ranks the No. 2 junior in the nation, was the main attraction in the semifinal game against the Tigers, but struggled shooting the ball. The 6-5 do-it-all player had a pair of dunks, but made just 5 of 16 shot attempts overall, including a 1-of-5 effort from three-point range. He finished the game with 14 points, well below his season average, and eight rebounds.
"Our defense slowed them up some," said Ogle. "Langford, for him, had a bad game. I don't know how much of that was us, or how much of that was he just had a bad game. I was pretty sure going into the game our defense wasn't going to be the issue. The question was could we handle their pressure, and we couldn't. Had we handled the ball better, it could have been a basketball game. We just don't handle the ball well enough right now.
"Their defense created too many steals, and really it wasn't one single player, it was pretty much spread throughout our team. We had six different players with turnovers, and four guys with multiple turnovers."
The Tigers committed 12 turnovers to New Albany's eight.
Mangas, Warsaw's go-to player, was just 3 of 15 from the field overall and 0 of 4 from the arc. He made 7 of 8 free throw attempts en route to his 13-point performance. Mangas also tallied nine rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals.
"Kyle had just kind of a bad shooting game for us," said Ogle. "He got quiet a few good shots, and their defense in the basket area was good. We won the rebounding (31-26) and I'm not disappointed in our defense, but we've just got to find the right guys who can take care of the ball, and find guys who can function in a team offense. We need to find guys who can complete passes, not lose the ball off the dribble."
Asher Blum tallied nine points and four boards in the loss, while Ross Johnson had five points and five boards and Jeremy David finished with four points and seven rebounds.
Sean East complimented Langford's offensive output with 14 points of his own, while Isaac Hibbard chipped in with nine points.
In the first semifinal game of the day, No. 3 Logansport beat No. 8 Lawrence North 53-51.
The star of the game was Logansport senior Matt Jennings, a Grace College commit who made 12 of 17 shot attempts on his way to a game-high 29 points. Senior Jalen Adaway scored 16 points for the Berries.
Kevin Easley led Lawrence North's semifinal effort with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Ra Kpedi chipped in with 14 points and eight boards.
Warsaw is in action again Jan. 6 when it hosts Northern Lakes Conference opponent Northridge.
