Manchester Wins First-Ever Softball Sectional Title

WALTON – Sydney Day scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, earning Manchester its first-ever sectional title, 2-1 over Oak Hill on the 2A Cass Sectional Thursday night. Brooklyn Howard pitched all nine innings for the Lady Squires, striking out eight and not allowing an earned run. Day had three hits, and scored on a RBI single by Howard in the fifth inning. Day and Howard had the only extra-base hits for either team; both had doubles in the contest. Oak Hill tied the game in the top of the seventh inning to set up the dramatic ending for Manchester. The Lady Squires had opportunities to score, leaving 11 runners stranded in the game. Oak Hill left seven on base. The title earns Manchester (15-9) a trip to Crawfordsville for Tuesday’s 7 p.m. regional game with Southmont (19-10), the Riverton Parke Sectional champ by virtue of its 11-2 win over the host school Thursday night. Boys Golf Thursday in Rochester Triton edged Tippecanoe Valley by one shot, 182-183 at Mill Creek Golf Course. Bremen was third at 196. Greg Music earned medalist honors for the Trojans, carding a 41. Jordan Anderson had a 44 for Triton, and teammates Braden Kreft and Isaac Wall shot 48 and 49, respectively. Senior Bryce Zimpelman led the Vikings with a 42. Jeremy Julian checked in with a 46. Cole Cumberland shot a 47 and Trevor Neeley carded a 48 for Valley. Thursday in Peru Manchester fell to Peru 165-183 in a match played at Rockhollow Golf Club in Peru. The visitors were led by connor Eichenauer’s 43 and Noah Cain’s 46. Medalist honors were to Peru’s Cam Smith with a 2-over 38, The Squires will play in the Wabash Invitational on Saturday. Thursday in Syracuse Columbia City edged Wawasee by one shot, 153-154, to end the regular season for the Warriors at South Shore Golf Course. Tristan Atwood was the medalist with a 2-under 34, and Kaleb Perry had a 38 for Wawasee. Cal Heinisch, Jeffrey Moore and Cameron Adams each shot 41 for the Warriors. Wawasee will play in the Warsaw Sectional at Rozella Ford on Friday.
