NORTH MANCHESTER — As a precursor to Saturday’s Wawasee Golf Invitational, Wawasee, Whitko and Manchester competed against each other Thursday at Sycamore Golf Club in North Manchester. All three teams will get together for Saturday’s tournament, which begins at 8 a.m. at South Shore Golf Club in Syracuse, but in Thursday’s match, Whitko prevailed with a 168. Wawasee finished their nine holes with a 169 and Manchester shot a 192. On the par-36 course, Whitko’s Daniel Zawlocki and Wawasee’s Ben Jackson each shot a 38.

Playing on Stonehenge Golf Club’s par-36 back nine Thursday, the third-ranked Warsaw Tigers shot a 152, defeating Huntington North (161) and Columbia City (199). Warsaw junior Bennett Hollar was the medalist, shooting a one-under, while senior Eric Tandy shot a 38, followed by sophomore Jon Schram’s 39, junior tyler Ostrom’s 40 and sophomore Tim Ahlersmeyer’s 43. The Tigers will be at Saturday’s Wawasee Invitational at South Shore Golf Club Saturday.

Playing at Knox’s par-36 Bass Lake Golf Course, the Triton Trojans shot a 149, defeating Knox’s 191 and Elkhart Christian’s 212. Triton’s Taran Kennedy was the medalist of the meet, shooting one-under, followed by Chandler Slone’s 37, Ryan Rapp’s 38, Quentyn Carpenter’s 39 and Griffyn Carpenter’s 40. The 9-0 Trojans will be at Saturday’s Marshall County Meet at Mystic Hills Golf Course in Culver.

SOFTBALL Thursday in Plymouth
In Northern Lakes Conference play, the Wawasee softball team captured a 4-0 win at Plymouth Thursday. Striking out seven batters, Wawasee’s Gabi Routson got the win and Mattia Rostochak, Kylie Norris and Stacie Carr all went 2 for 4, with Carr driving in two runs. The win improves Wawasee to 6-5 overall and 1-2 in the NLC as it prepares to face Goshen at home today for another conference game.
The Triton softball team posted an 11-6 Northern State Conference win at LaVille Thursday. Mallorie Jennings was the winning pitcher, while Hannah Downing hit two doubles and Shelby Steinman added a triple and three RBIs. The Triton Lady Trojans are in NSC play again today, hosting Culver at 5 p.m.
The Manchester girls tennis team defended its home courts Thursday against Fort Wayne Wayne, pulling off a 5-0 victory. In the sweep, Manchester got wins from Megan Metzger (No. 1 singles), Malyssa Bedke (No. 2 singles) and Lauren Wagoner (No. 3 singles). Manchester’s No. 1 doubles team of Skye Haywood and Rebecca Ruppert also won, as did Amy Collett and Tawni Kincaid at No. 2 doubles. The 2-3 Manchester Lady Squires travel to Wabash for the Three Rivers Conference Individual Tournament Saturday at 9 a.m.
The Warsaw boys track and field team picked up two Northern Lakes Conference wins Thursday at home, while the Wawasee Warriors got one and dropped one. In the three-team meet at the Tiger Athletic Complex, Warsaw defeated Wawasee 93-39 and NorthWood 96-36, while Wawasee did get a 73-59 victory over NorthWood. Warsaw finished the meet by winning nine of 16 events and Wawasee won four events. Winning for the Warsaw Tigers were its 3200 relay (Scott Smyth, Trevor Callahan, Jacob Poyner, Spencer Rheinhardt), Robert Strahan (100), Callahan (1600), Poyner (800), Ellis Coon (3200), its 1600 relay (Ryan Goon, Poyner, Wyatt Jones, Rheinhardt), Zack Rooney (long jump), Zac Erba (discus) and Cameron Fritzel (shot put). Wawasee’s Nathan Cook won the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles, Ben Klaybor took first place in the high jump and the 400 relay of Josh Sumpter, Cook, Josh Dingeldein and Zac Patrick also won. Warsaw hosts its annual Max Truex Invitational today, while Wawasee’s next meet is Saturday at the John Reed Relays at East Noble.
Winning 11 of 16 events, the Whitko boys track and field team doubled up Columbia City Thursday on the road, returning home with an 88-44 victory. In the meet, Whitko swept all three relays, including the 3200 (Jude Stieglitz, Brian Menzie, Brody Wilson, Trapper Mize), 400 (Connor Stouder, Max Elder, Scott Skiles, Scott Paulus) and 1600 (Brandon Nettrouer, Elder, Skiles, Stouder). Along with being on two winning relays, Stouder also won the 100 and 200, with other individual Whitko wins coming from Mize (1600, 3200) Brent Busz (110 hurdles), Jordan Sims (300 hurdles), Stieglitz (800), Elder (high jump) and Alex Wilkinson (pole vault). The Wildcats send their freshman and sophomore athletes to Saturday’s Tippecanoe Valley Invitational, while the whole team is back in action May 6 at the Concord Relays.
