NORTH MANCHESTER – When COVID-19 prevented Manchester University from conducting commencement exercises in the spring, it polled members of the Class of 2020 about their wishes.
“They made it clear that they want to celebrate in person,” said President Dave McFadden. “Last spring, we hoped by waiting until October, the COVID-19 pandemic would no longer be an issue. Unfortunately, it is. We are going ahead with in-person ceremonies, but we also want to reduce the risk of spreading the virus as much as we humanly can.”
Manchester will celebrate the Class of 2020 in several small ceremonies Oct. 17 at Cordier Auditorium on the North Manchester campus, according to a press release from Manchester university.
Four are scheduled: 9 a.m. for graduate and professional commencement; 11 a.m. for honors graduates and the College of Pharmacy, Natural and Health Sciences; 1 p.m. for the College of Arts and Humanities and College of Education and Social Sciences; and 3 p.m. for the College of Business, including Master of Accountancy.
Each student is permitted to invite a limited number of guests. No ceremonies are open to the public. Each will be livestreamed at www.manchester.edu/graduation/video, the release stated.
The timing allows for cleaning between each ceremony and accommodates graduates’ schedules whenever possible.
Masks and social distancing are required.
Baccalaureate, which will be virtual, will be livestreamed at 7 p.m. Friday.
