Manchester Tennis Team Rolls To First-Round Sectional Win

PERU – Manchester’s tennis team got wins in both doubles matches and at No. 1 singles to win its first-round sectional match 3-2 over Wabash Wednesday in Peru. Squire senior Max Karg rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Taylor Vigar at No. 1 singles, and the No. 1 doubles duo of seniors Noah Cain and Matthew Pegg had little trouble in their straight-set win. At No. 2 doubles, junior Heath Dierks and freshman Luke Donathan earned the match-deciding win for the Squires. “These seniors carry themselves with confidence and know how to win,” said Manchester head coach Joel Eichenauer. The Squires advance to the sectional championship this afternoon, where they will take on host Peru, a 4-1 winner over Maconaquah on Wednesday. The championship match is set to begin at 5:15. Boys Soccer Wednesday in Denver Manchester wrapped up the first-ever Three Rivers Conference boys soccer title Wednesday with a 4-0 win at North Miami. Seniors Elisiel Guerrero and Colin McNeeley scored twice each for the Squires. Nathan Self, Caleb Haecker, Eli Shaum and McNeeley were all credited with assists. In TRC play Manchester outscored opponents 28-0 and were undefeated and untied in five matches. The Squires close out their regular season with a home match against South Adams Saturday morning.
Girls Soccer Wednesday in Columbia City Whitko closed out its regular season with a 5-0 loss to Columbia City. Senior goalkeeper Ilyssa Bennett was credited with 13 saves in the match. The Lady Wildcats begin sectional play Monday against Eastbrook. The match will begin at 5 p.m. at Oak Hill in Converse.
