Manchester Schools Receives Grant

NORTH MANCHESTER - At Tuesday night’s meeting, Manchester Community Schools board members accepted $46,250 in digital learning and community advisory grant funding, along with $2,148.07 in donations.

The funds from the grant will be used for “professional and curriculum development,” Curriculum Director Sue Gnagy told the board.

Donations included $364.81 to the Manchester Junior-Senior High School Media Center, funded in part by the Community Foundations of Wabash County’s Audio-Visual Endowment.

During hearing of patrons, several community members expressed their concerns regarding comprehensive sex education, the “sexualization of children,” mental health among students and suicide prevention.

Jake Longnecker told the board that a video about suicide prevention recently shown to 10th-graders was “promoting underage sex.” Longnecker both morally and legally opposed the video, asking, “If we ask people to check their faith at the door [of the school], are we also going to ask them to check their ideologies at the door?”

Superintendent Teresa Gremaux commented on the coronavirus outbreak. “Just know that the students’ and staff’s safety is paramount and we want to make sure that we do everything possible to ensure that proper safeguards are in place,” she said.

The next regular school board meeting will be at 6 p.m. April 14.
