NORTH MANCHESTER - The first conference game of the season is always one of the biggest games of the year.
This was no exception for Southwood and Manchester Friday.
With a record of 2-0 and a No. 10 ranking in 2A, Manchester was determined to improve their stature.
"I told my players before the game that being ranked 10th is no big deal this early in the season," Manchester coach Gary Goshert said. "Anything can change, and I think our team was aware of that."
The Squires were aware and gained their first conference win of the year by beating Southwood 47-30.
In the first quarter, Southwood kept the game close, when D.J. Marshall hit a three-pointer. But, the gap grew wider when Southwood accumulated 10 turnovers in the first half, while Squire Rex Reimer and Chris Enyeart scored a total of 24 points.
"We fought in the first half, but let down too easily in the second," Southwood coach Steve McClure said. "Our problem was turnovers, which made a huge difference in the game."
The Squires also outrebounded Southwood throughout the game, as Enyeart had five boards and Scot Croner had six.
"Chris Good came on good for us, having four rebounds Continued from Page 1B
and five points, he'll continue to show improvement throughout the rest of the season," Goshert said. "I was proud of our team when they improved their passing game from in the second quarter on. I think at the start of the game, we were too uptight about winning, and we made mistakes that we had practiced for hours, but we recovered and it showed."
Manchester's record improves to 3-0, while Southwood falls to 1-1. Manchester is at Rochester next Friday.
