Manchester Revises Records Policy

Posted

NORTH MANCHESTER - Manchester Community schools voted to adopt revisions to its records policy at last night's board meeting.

Revisions to the policy include restrictions on federal funding for sex and AIDS education except when intended to promote abstinence and clarifications to existing policies for school personnel, board members and students.

The records polcies are being by Neola of Indiana, a division of Neola Inc.

Nancy Alspaugh, MHS principal, said the revisions are "reflective of changes come down through No Child Left Behind legislation."

The board also voted to implement a summer school program for 2003.

The school will offer regular summer classes, ISTEP remediation, summer music and drivers' education.

The projected summer school cost to the corporation is $8,546.08 after expected state reimbursements.

Acting superintendent Kim Thurston said that amount is "a good bargain for the return we get during the school year."

Summer school students need less remediation work during the school year, and the corporation can operate on a smaller full-time staff.

The board also:

• Was presented with an update of the proposed cost reduction plan for 2003. The current draft includes work force reduction, overtime pay reduction and efforts to conserve energy in school buildings.

On April 1 a more detailed report will be available with approximate dollar amounts assigned to specific programs and positions.

• Approved four grant proposals. If received, the grants will provide a "Level Lending Library" for first-graders, conflict resolution training for junior high students, funding for a student and faculty book club at the high school and a set of Spanish/English dictionaries for Sandy Calloway's Spanish class.

• Approved hiring Lori Sorg as administrative secretary for Manchester High School and Dale Drasny as assistant track coach for the high school.
