NORTH MANCHESTER - During Monday evening’s special meeting, held virtually, the Manchester School Board awarded a restroom addition bid and approved the hiring of a districtwide remote learning coordinator.
Alyx Brandewie will serve as a point of contact between parents, students and teachers amid the pandemic and virtual learning, explained Superintendent Teresa Gremaux. The board approved a one-year contract.
The board awarded a bid to Milestone Construction of Syracuse for an additional restroom in Manchester Elementary School. A janitorial closet will be converted into a staff restroom. The project should take between four and six weeks.
Board Secretary David Terflinger voiced concerns regarding students’ re-entry in classrooms, asking if a group of teachers would do a “dry run” and determine if social distancing is possible. Terflinger was also concerned that students may not be able to hear their teachers through their masks.
Gremaux explained that while no “dry runs” are in the works at MCS, administrators are observing other corporations’ classrooms, and microphones are available for use at MES to ensure that all students can hear their teachers through face coverings.
The board’s next regular meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Aug. 11.
