Manchester Golf Advances With 3rd Place Sectional Finish

HUNTINGTON – Manchester’s golf team earned a spot in this weekend’s regional with a third-place finish in the Huntington North sectional Saturday at Norwood Golf Club. The Lady Squires’ team score of 415 was behind only Southwood (369) and Huntington North (374). Lydia Little paced Manchester with a 92, and Kelsey Eichenauer had a 96 on a windy day. Madyson Ulrey turned in a 108, Madison Hire carded a 119 and Leiah Brandenburg a 120. “I’m so proud of the girls. They played awesome and battled (Saturday),” said Manchester head coach Joshua Troyer via e-mail. “Their hard work and determination this year has paid off and they deserve all the credit. I cannot express how proud I am of them and thrilled to be able to battle another week with them.” The regional will be Saturday at Noble Hawk Golf Links in Kendallville. Cross Country Saturday in Lagrange Manchester’s girls team won its section of the state’s largest cross country race, the New Prairie Invitational, Saturday. Rae Bedke paced the Lady Squires, finishing third in her race. Thomas Rohr finished sixth in the small school division for the Squires, leading them to a ninth-place finish out of 25 schools. Warsaw’s boys finished 17th of 29 schools. The Tigers were paced by Owen Glogovsky’s 14th place finish. The Lady Tigers took third as a team, with Mia Beckham and Allison Miller finishing seventh and 11th, respectively. Tippecanoe Valley’s boys finished 24th and the girls 22nd in the medium-sized school race. Triton’s boys were 18th and girls 17th in the small school division. Saturday in Ligonier The Whitko boys cross country team finished 21st out of 22 scoring teams at the West Noble Invitational. Junior Josh Wright led the Wildcats in 18:43, followed by sophomore Logan Busz in 19:55. Zack Freel clocked a 20:56, Ezra Miller a 21:34 and Kort Gebert in 25:08. Due to an injury the Lady Wildcats couldn’t field a full team. Senior Brigit Nemitz finished 35th in 21:39. Others competing were Suzanne Sickafoose (22:46), Hanna Yohe (24:08) and Lizz Foutz (26:24). Both teams will race at Rochester Wednesday afternoon.
Volleyball Saturday in Syracuse Whitko went 3-1, Wawasee 2-2 and Tippecanoe Valley 1-3 in the Wawasee Invitational Saturday. Whitko lost to Bethany Christian 25-23, 25-19; beat Wawasee 25-17, 25-19; Culver Academies 25-20, 25-20 and Columbia City 25-22, 25-22. For the tournament Kaitlyn Reed had 38 kills and 49 digs, Emily Day had 15 kills and 28 digs, Haley Yohe had 83 assists and five aces, Whitney Marsh had 13 kills and six blocks, and Emily Hughes had 22 digs and nine kills. Wawasee beat Culver Community 23-25, 25-19, 15-11, lost to Whitko, lost to Bethany Christian 25-15, 25-16 and beat Wabash 25-13. 25-21. Hannah-Marie Lamle had 17 kills and sic blocks, Seaquinn Bright had 14 kills, Liz hardy seven blocks, Becca Anderson 10 aces, Peyton Rookstool six aces and Taylor Mock 27 assists for the tournament. Reed, Lamle and Bright were named to the all-tournament team, along with Garrett’s Taylor Smith and Drue Bodey and Bethany Christian’s Darianne Maust. Abby Betten had 31 kills and 28 digs on the day for the Lady Vikings. Shayleigh Shriver had three aces, Maddy Henninger 59 assists and Lexi O’Connell recorded 4-1/2 blocks for Tippecanoe. Whitko will make the trip back to Syracuse and have a rematch with Wawasee this evening. Valley will host Northfield on Three Rivers Conference play on Thursday.
Saturday in Leo-Cedarville Manchester finished sixth of nine teams at the Leo Invitational. The Lady Squires lost to Leo 25-16, 25-8, then beat New Haven 25-17, 22-25, 15-8. The team then lost to Central Noble 25-21, 20-25, 15-10 and Pioneer 25-15, 25-9. For the tournament Cierra Carter led Manchester with 27 kills and 21 digs. Kendra Binkley had five aces and Kendra Auler had 35 assists. The Lady Squires will host Rochester in Three Rivers Conference play tonight.
Saturday in Michigan City Warsaw’s volleyball team went 1-2 at the Michigan City Invitational, losing its opener to seventh-ranked (Class 4A) Fort Wayne Concordia 20-25, 25-22, 15-13. Warsaw then beat Concord 25-23, 25-10 before falling to fourth-ranked (4A) Valparaiso, 21-25, 25-19, 15-10. Peyton Adameic had 49 digs for the tournament, while Cassie Hoag had 76 assists and six aces. Jordyn Lindeman had six blocks and 26 kills for the Lady Tigers. Warsaw will host Wawasee in the Tiger Den in Northern Lakes Conference play on Thursday.
Friday in Winona Lake Lakeland Christian Academy claimed a 25-13, 25-16, 25-15 win over South Bend Career Academy. The Lady Cougars were led by Hannah Delp, who had six aces, 18 assists and a pair of kills. Also helping the Cougars was Brighty Walters with seven aces. Carissa Urschalitz had seven kills and three blocks. LCA will host Fort Wayne Canterbury on Tuesday.
Tennis Saturday in Merrillville Wawasee finished fifth and Triton sixth in the Merrillville Invitational. Centerville was the tournament champion. For the Warriors, Cal Heinisch and Nate Perek finished third at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Nate Haines finished fifth at No. 1 singles, and the No. 1 doubles team of Tim Conley and Dylan Staley also took fifth place. Triton’s Chase Butler finished fourth at No. 3 singles, and Mace Eads finished fifth at No. 2 singles. Gavin Eads at No. 1 singles, and the No. 1 doubles team of Dalton Bailey and Keygan Moiser each finished sixth. Wawasee will travel to Nappanee to take on NorthWood this afternoon. Triton opens play in the Hoosier North Athletic Conference on Thursday.
Boys Soccer Saturday in Kendallville Wawasee claimed a 3-2 win at East Noble, with the Warriors getting goals from Kyle Weideman and Alex Doll. The Warriors also benefitted from an own goal by the Knights. “It’s great to see such positive play from our boys,” Wawasee head coach Jordan Sharp said via fax. “This is the most comfortable we have looked on the field together yet. The best is yet to come.” Wawasee, now 3-7-1 on the year, will host defending state champion Goshen Tuesday evening.
Football Saturday in Culver Triton gave up 12 points in the first quarter, and Culver Community tacked on a touchdown in the fourth quarter in its 19-0 win over the Trojans on Saturday. Jeremy Jones ran for 51 yards n 11 carries for Triton, and Drew Stichter caught two passes for 23 yards. The Trojans fell to 1-4 on the year, 1-3 in the Hoosier North Athletic Conference, and will travel to Winamac on Friday.
