Manchester Enrollment Down Slightly, Performance Up

Numbers on Manchester Community Schools' Annual Performance Report are up for the corporation as a whole, except for enrollment, but the high school statistics have fluctuated over the past three years.
During the 2006-07 school year, student enrollment at Manchester Schools totaled 1,552 students. That dropped to 1,537 in 2007-08 and to 1,533 in 2008-09. Enrollment increased by one to 1,534 in 2009-10.
While the state average for total expenditure per pupil three-year average was $10,700, Manchester's total expenditure per pupil was $9,600 in 2006-07 and 2007-08, increasing to $10,300 in 2008-09.The state teacher salary range minimum was $24,133, but Manchester's was $29,751 in 2006-07; $30,046 in 2007-08; and $31,100 in 2008-09.
The yearly report also provides the teacher salary range maximum. While the state maximum was $84,686, the maximum for Manchester was $57,388 in 2006-07 and 2007-08; increasing to $59,401 in 2008-09.
Up at Manchester is the number of special education, gifted and talented, free lunches/textbooks and limited English proficiency students.
In 2006-07, there were 14.8 percent of students in special education. That increased to 14.9 percent in 2007-08 and 15.3 percent in 2008-09. The state average was 17.5 percent.
Gifted and talented students were 12 percent in 2006-07 and 2008-09, only decreasing to 11 percent in 2007-08. The state average was 14 percent.
Students receiving free lunches/textbooks increased from 38 percent in 2006-07; to 44 percent in 2007-08; and to 46 percent in 2008-09. The state average was 44 percent.
Percentage of LEP students increased from 1.2 percent in 2006-07 to 1.3 percent in 2007-08 and to 1.5 percent in 2008-09. The state average was 4.2 percent.
At Manchester Junior-Senior High School, student enrollment has dropped by 61 students from 2006-07 to 2009-10. In 2006-07, there were 715 students at MHS; 698 in 2007-08; 678 in 2008-09; and 654 in 2009-10.
The SAT average score at MHS has fluctuated but currently remains above the state result of 1003. In 2006-07, the SAT average was 1001; was 1025 in 2007-08; and was 1014 in 2008-09.
The percentage of 12th-graders taking the SAT however has remained fairly close. In 2006-07 it was 53 percent; 54 percent in 2007-08; and 49 percent in 2008-09. The state average also is 49 percent.
The state result for graduation rate is 81.5 percent. At MHS, the graduation rate was 90.1 percent in 2006-07; 87.9 percent in 2007-08; and 89.1 percent in 2008-09.
Every year from 2006 to 2009, the attendance rate at MHS did not change and remained at 94.8 percent, according to Manchester's Annual Performance Report. The state average was 96.1 percent.
In 2006-07, the number of students who dropped out of MHS was 13, with no students suspended and seven expelled. The following year, 2007-08, there were seven drop outs, no students suspended and four expelled. Then in 2008-09, there were six drop outs, three students suspended and one student expelled.
The number of expulsions and suspensions at MHS involving drugs, weapons or alcohol was three in 2006-07; and one in 2007-08 and in 2008-09.
