At Indianapolis, in a classic medieval battle, the Lancers were knocked off their horses by the Knights, falling to Marian 11-10 and 2-1. The Lancers were ahead in both games until the bottom of the seventh inning when the Knights rallied for the victory.
In game one, the Lancers led 7-5 behind a six-run fourth inning. Doubles by freshmen Kenny Jennings and Greg Hannah plated four of those runs. Grace added three more in the fifth on an RBI double by John Edwards, an error, and a base hit by Greg Hannah, and the Lancers were up 10-5 after five. In the sixth, Lancer hurler Terry Aukeman began to tire, walking the first two batters. He was replaced by Mike Cox who struck out the first batter then gave up a three-run homer to close the gap to 10-8. In the Marian seventh, three errors allowed two runs to score and tie the game. Then, with two outs, Marian's cleanup hitter smacked a single to score the game-winning run.
Kenny Jennings was 3-3 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored while Greg Hannah was 2-4 with three RBI and one run scored. Josh Bailey was 2-4 and scored three runs.
In game two, Lancer starter Steve Babinski was masterful through six innings, allowing just two runners to reach base and no runs. The Lancers also went down 1-2-3 in the first four innings. Then Josh Bailey led off the fifth with a single, stole second, moved up on a single by Mike Cox, and scored on a grounder by Greg Hannah to put Grace up 1-0. The Lancers had two hits and a walk in the sixth, but could not score, entering the seventh with a slim 1-0 lead. However, the Knights battled in the bottom of the seventh. The first batter singled, moved up on an error and a groundout, and scored on another base hit. Then, with two out, Marian's Hennesy singled to score the game winner.
Josh Bailey was 2-3 with a run scored to lead the Lancers offensively. Babinski picked up the loss despite allowing just one earned run.
The Lancers fell to 2-19 on the season and 0-8 in the MCC. They travel to Purdue North Central Saturday for a noon start.
