Manchester Aquatic Club Needs Volunteers

Posted

NORTH MANCHESTER - The Manchester Aquatic Club is experiencing a shortage of parent volunteers, North Manchester Parks Director Brian Wagner told park board members Wednesday. He said the organization needs parent volunteers to help in order to succeed.

Board vice president Dennis Frieden asked Wagner how MAC is doing this year.

"I think there's peaks and valleys," Wagner said. "They're in a pretty deep valley right now."

Wagner said he talked to MAC coach Ben Kambs about the number of swimmers involved in MAC. Kambs said he is looking at losing two swimmers because the club is not swimming every day.

The parks board approved MAC to use the pool's facility two days each week at no charge. Frieden said he thinks it is important that the board support MAC.

In other business:

• Wagner said monthly revenues for May were down slightly.

"It was cold and rainy enough (in May) that it affected our admissions at the pool," Wagner said. But, he added, numbers are up for memberships and people using the fitness facility.

• Wagner reported that the first phase of the Warvel Park Disabled Access Plan has been completed: sidewalks that connect to both the small and large pavilions in the park.

• Board members approved hiring Clint Dickason to help teach summer swimming lessons. Wagner said he is a Manchester College student and he recently earned his Water Swim Instructor's license.

• Board members approved donating two free pool memberships to Wabash County Hospital to auction off in their Gala Auction. Assistant parks director Donna Boomershine said the parks department has done this each year for the past few years.

• Board members approved the 2002 parks department budget. The budget will next go to the town council for approval through three readings.

• The next park board meeting is July 25 at 5:45 p.m. in the Seward Memorial Building, North Manchester.

North Manchester Department of Park and Recreation Board members are: president Anne Myers, vice president Dennis Frieden, parks director Brian Wagner, assistant parks director Donna Boomershine, Larry Miller and Kay Batdorf. Brad Yoder is Plan Commission representative.
