NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊUndercutting the allotted dollar amount, Manchester school board approved bids Tuesday for Manchester Junior High's re-roofing project.
Dahm Brothers, Fort Wayne, bid $93,250 to do the project's second phase. The next lowest bidder was undersold by nearly $20,000.
The project fund is limited to $100,000 in phase II costs. The board does not have the money in the Capital Projects Fund to pay more, said acting superintendent Kim Thurston.
Dahm Brothers, who worked on phase I of the project last summer, will replace the wet insulation beneath the roof's cracked asphalt overlay. They will re-cover the 25-year-old roof with new asphalt.
Roof repairs were split into three phases to save money, said Thurston.
"If you have enough money to buy a Chevrolet, would you go out and buy a Cadillac?" said Thurston.
Re-roofing Manchester Junior High School will begin during spring break with minor repairs. The major repairs are scheduled for summer.
The board also announced Laketon Elementary second-grade teacher Sue Meyer's early retirement at the end of the school year.
Meyer began teaching in 1965 at Urbana Elementary School. She moved to Thomas Marshall Elementary in 1978 and has been at Laketon Elementary since 1983.
"Her leadership and experience has been valuable to the school," said Laketon Elementary principal Denny Craft.
Craft recognized Meyer's work with student teachers and with Laketon Elementary's family reading night and Grandparents' Day committees.
Thurston said the board "regrets" her leaving.
The school board members are: president Sally Krouse, vice president Virginia Gunter, secretary Brad Perrott, Thom Frantz, Larry Miller, Todd Speicher, Kent Trickle, acting superintendent Kim Thurston and school corporation attorney Al Schlitt.
