Gary Gerard is assuming the role of general manager at the Times-Union, publisher Lane Williams Hartle announced today.

Gerard has been employed at the newspaper since 1988 as managing editor.

He is a 1980 graduate of Indiana State University with a bachelor's degree in journalism.

Many of his newsroom duties will be integrated into his new role.

Gerard follows Norm Hagg, who began his career at WRSW radio in 1962.

In 1963, he moved to the Times-Union as a reporter.

Hagg held newsroom positions of sports editor, city editor and managing editor before being named general manager in 1981.

Hagg will remain employed at the newspaper as a consultant and also will continue to administer company benefits.
