Man Receives One Year Probation for Stabbing

A 20-year-old man responsible for an April stabbing on Papakeechie Lake was sentenced in Superior Court I Wednesday morning.

Scott Koontz,  20, Middlebury,  was sentenced to one year on probation  on a suspended sentence for battery, a Class A misdemeanor, as a lesser included offense of count 1, battery,  a Class C felony. Koontz was additionally ordered to pay court costs and immediately begin a GED program.

Koontz was originally charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, a Class B felony, but the charges were later changed to battery, a Class C felony.

On April 8,  Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to 9974 E. Bald Eagle Drive, Syracuse, in the Papakeechie Estates addition.  Upon arrival deputies located Tyler James Niles, 24, Syracuse, who had sustained a stab wound to the neck. Niles was transported to a South Bend hospital in serious condition.
