Firefighters pulled a man from his burning vehicle early Sunday after he apparently passed out in the car with his foot on the accelerator.
Warsaw Fire Department responded to the 4:17 a.m. call of a car fire in the parking lot of Eastgate Apartments. While attempting to extinguish the blaze, firefighters realized someone was inside. A window was broken so that 20-year-old Joshua R. Naves could be pulled out.
Naves was not breathing and did not have a pulse until firefighters Kerry Stogsdill and Terry Himes performed CPR on him. Firefighter Tim Hood assisted in the rescue and resuscitation. Naves was then taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital for treatment.
According to a Warsaw Police Department report, a neighbor reported hearing the motor of a vehicle revving for about 45 minutes prior to the fire being reported. Officials said the continuous acceleration caused the vehicle to overheat and catch fire.
Police spoke with Naves at KCH, but he did not remember what happened. He reportedly was drinking beer prior to the incident. Police are seeking a warrant for Naves for a charge of illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor.
