LEESBURG - A Palestine man was jailed Friday after a chase which ended when the car he was driving hit a house in Leesburg.

Raul Herrera Calderon, 24, of 5901 Ind. 25S, Palestine, is being held without bond in the Kosciusko County Jail on charges of refusing to submit to chemical testing, leaving the scene of an accident, resisting/fleeing law enforcement and criminal recklessness. He also is being held for authorities in Elkhart County.

According to a Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department report, Calderon was involved in an accident in Elkhart County and was fleeing from police when Deputy Jeff Bronsing and a Milford officer attempted to stop him on Ind. 15.

Bronsing noted that Calderon almost struck his squad car head-on on Ind. 15 before fleeing into Leesburg. Calderon then reportedly went off the road and began to drive through residential yards before striking a house at 702 Plum St. He then allegedly fled on foot and was chased into a residence, where he was found hiding in a bedroom.

The incident took place about 4:30 p.m.

Damage to Calderon's car was estimated at $1,000 to $2,500. The house, owned by Robert Barth Jr., EMS T30 Lane, Leesburg, sustained $5,000 to $10,000 in damage.
