NORTH WEBSTER – A Warsaw man is in serious condition this morning after officers said he fell trying to remove his hunting tree stand at Tri-County Fish and Wildlife Saturday.
Indiana Department of Natural Resources conservation officers are investigating the tree stand accident after receiving a call at 1:24 p.m. Saturday.
According to conservation officers, Barry D. Self, 51, Warsaw, was attempting to remove his tree stand when he fell approximately 13 feet to the ground.
According to officers, Self’s 17-year-old son was with him and called 911.
Self landed on his left side, causing injuries to his back and arms.
Self was transported out of the Fish & Wildlife Area by Syracuse EMS and airlifted by Parkview Air to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Self was listed in serious condition this morning, according to a Parkview official.
DNR officials released the following statement concerning such incidents: “Many accidents occur each year as a result of hunters removing tree stands. Conservation officers recommend the use of a fall arrest system or safety harness while removing tree stands.”
North Webster and Syracuse fire departments assisted with the call.
