A Warsaw man arrested after allegedly leaving the scene of an accident reportedly damaged a police car by headbutting it several times Sunday afternoon.
Kenneth John Morgan, 23, of 517 W. Pike St., Warsaw, was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 7:15 p.m. on charges of leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, public intoxication and criminal mischief. He was released after posting a $350 bond.
Morgan was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw, for treatment of the self-inflicted injuries after his apprehension.
According to a Warsaw Police Department report, Morgan failed to stop at the intersection of Union Street and Winona Avenue, striking an eastbound car driven by Lynda F. Vandervinne, 49, of Rochester. Vandervinne complained of neck pain as a result of the 3:55 p.m. accident and was taken to KCH for treatment.
Police said Vandervinne could not avoid the collision when Morgan pulled into her path.
The bumper from Morgan's car was found at the scene of the accident and an off-duty police officer followed Morgan's bumperless car to his Pike Street residence. After arriving at the home, the officer knocked at the back door of Morgan's residence and, when nobody answered the door, a forced entry was made. Several witnesses then told police Morgan ran out the front door of the home and into a nearby wooded area.
Morgan was apprehended a short time later and, while in handcuffs, reportedly slammed his head into a window of a Warsaw police car, causing the window to break. He was held down across the trunk of the vehicle and, when it appeared he had calmed down, police released the hold they had on him. Morgan then allegedly began to beat his head against the trunk lid, causing several dents in the vehicle.
Damage from the accident is estimated at $5,000 to $10,000.
Morgan reportedly told police he fled the scene of the accident because he did not have insurance.
