Make Hay

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:

I (93 years old) once lived on a farm. I cut hay, raked hay, piled hay, helped haul hay and spread hay high in a barn.

If I were asked to make a statement as to what I think most important, it would be, "Make hay while the sun shines." One cannot make or pack hay in a barn when the hay is wet. I guess it would heat up and maybe blow up. I am not sure.

I think during life, when all is well, life goes on, not realizing whatever you do. One might distribute, help someone, create or make something in life. That will be your legacy.

When young, hopefully one has many days to be on earth. You can decide what you wish as part of your legacy. If you wait till old, it is too late. One does not have a chance to live over again. I am reminded what my uncle said when old, "Don't squander your life away, like I did."

I hope this letter will reach many. To remind them that "time waits for no man." That one can only make hay when the sun shines."

Today is your opportunity. I suggest to pack your legacy with eternal values. All other ground is sinking sand. Then when old you will be like a kettle of potatoes boiling on stove when the cover is jumping up and down, full of joy in your heart. You will want to praise our God all day long. You will be so thankful in your heart.
