National "Make A Blanket Day" is Saturday. The event is a fund-raising project between Janome America, a sewing machine manufacturer, and Project Linus, a nonprofit organization that distributes blankets to children in need throughout the United States.
Lowery Sewing and Vacuum Center, 707 E. Winona Ave. in Warsaw, participates in the project and already has collected more than 90 blankets, according to educator Peggy Snider.
"Last year we had 127 quilts and this year would like to get to 150," Snider said. "We have all different kinds, some are machine-pieced, some embroidered, some appliqued, some flannel or polar fleece."
Make A Blanket Day was two Saturdays ago when community members came to Lowrey's and sewed for the project. Many people are turning them in from work done at home.
Nationally, this year's goal is to collect 75,000 new handmade, washable blankets at Janome dealers across the country.
Since it began in 1995, Project Linus has distributed more than 735,000 blankets to children who are seriously ill, traumatized or otherwise in need.
Snider said folks can sign up for Project Linus in late December through early January each year. Information is available on blanket requirements.
