BREMEN - Madge Elinor Smith, 87, of Bremen, passed away Nov. 7, 2010, surrounded by her loving family at the Bremen Health Care Center.
She was born June 23, 1923, to Welcome and Bernice Berg Huff. On Sept. 23, 1945, she married Richard E. Smith, who survives.
She lived most of her life on the family farm southeast of Bremen. Her giving spirit, gentle nature and organization were evident in all that she did. She graduated as valedictorian of Bremen High School in 1941 and earned a bachelor's degree in food and nutrition from Purdue University in 1944. She was a member of Bremen (formerly Salem) United Methodist Church from the time she was a child. She taught Sunday school, served as children's Sunday school superintendent and was a leader in United Methodist Women. She served as 4-H leader in German Township for 14 years, worked as a substitute teacher in Bremen Schools and worked as a dietitian at Community Hospital of Bremen and some surrounding nursing homes. She served in the Army during World War II as a dietitian in a hospital.
Also surviving are two daughters, Linda (and spouse Dennis) Burch, Mentone, and Pamela (and spouse Don) Orr, Noblesville; five grandchildren: Dawn (and spouse Shawn) Campbell, Bremen; Deanna (and spouse Scott) Greene and Deb Burch, all of Fort Wayne; David (and spouse Kara) Orr, Piedmont, S.C.; and Daniel (and spouse Celina) Orr, Dallas, Texas; six great-grandchildren: Abby and Zach Campbell, Aaron, Isaac and Ellie Greene and Caleb Orr; a brother, Clark Huff; and a sister-in-law, Hilda Myers. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bremen United Methodist Church, officiated by Pastor Kevin Miller. Burial will be in Bremen Cemetery.
Calling is from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Mishler Funeral Home, Bremen, and one hour prior to the service at the church.
