Mad Rush Begins: Local shoppers wait for stores to open

If today's crowds are any indication, Christmas shoppers in Warsaw are just as hungry for bargains as shoppers in the rest of Indiana.

At least 250 people were waiting for Kmart to open its doors at 6 a.m. today, said manager Karl Heid.

And the crowds were still there three hours later. "We're loaded right now," he said. "Our parking lot is as full as I've ever seen it."

Kmart also was open on Thanksgiving, Heid said. "We were extremely busy yesterday."

More than a dozen people were waiting in line when Wal-Mart opened at midnight, manager Larry Wells said, and the store was still humming later this morning.

"About 4:30, 5 o'clock, we had a tremendous crowd," Wells said.

Both managers said they believe the Christmas shopping crowds to be bigger than last year.

Quality Farm & Fleet reported being "swamped" around 8 a.m., and Big Lots, which opened at 6 a.m., also was busy.

Whether this year is busier than last year at Big Lots is still not sure, said assistant manager Steve Cosner.

"It looks a little better than last year but it's still too early to tell," he said. "But we're off to a great start. It's definitely the day after Thanksgiving, you know what I'm saying?"
