Lye Purchase Leads to Meth Arrest

A Syracuse woman was arrested Friday after a meth-making ingredient purchase at a local superstore led police to her vehicle, where they reportedly found a stash of the finished drug and more precursors.

Denise Diane Kirkwood, 48, of 11548 N. Ind. 13, Syracuse,  was booked Friday into Kosciusko County Jail on charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of paraphernalia, after a Warsaw police office pulled her over on U.S. 30 as she was pulling away from the Menards store at 1000 Husky Trail.

According to police, Kirkwood purchased the common meth-making ingredient lye from the store. Warsaw Police Cpl. Al Danko pulled her over as she was pulling away from the store, and a K-9 was called out to sniff the vehicle, police spokesman Lt. Kip Shuter said.

The dog gave a positive alert to narcotics in the vehicle, leading police to search it, Shuter said. Eight grams of finished meth was seized, as well as 39 packs of pseudoephedrine, Shuter said.

Police also found a pipe, pipe cleaners, baggies, plastic pipes, a scale, foil and a lighter, Shuter said.

Kirkwood told police the drugs and the ingredients were not hers, Shuter said.

Kirkwood is being held on a $5,000 bond.
