LTPO to Clean lake

Posted
LEESBURG – The Lake Tippecanoe Property Owners has decided to support a “pilot” project of supporting landing directors with the removal of weeds and debris.

The pilot project has been designated as the “Weed Clean Up for Black’s and Bigler’s Landings.” The concept is to help remove years of weeds and debris in areas that are too large a project for any single individual to handle and then provide the property owners of these two landings a “relatively clean” beach that they will then maintain.

The hope is to remove significant amounts of decaying weeds and leaves that pollute the lake by releasing excess phosphors. This phosphorus then fosters the excess growth of more weeds that are then cut up by motor boats and washed ashore and require cleaning out every weekend.

The property owners are being asked to keep their beaches clean by removing the weeds that wash ashore on their property. By removing the weeds from their beaches to designated areas, LTPO will then help support the removal of these weeds to a farmer who has accept these for disposal on his property. LTPO is expecting to be able to provide names of young men and women looking for summer work who will be available for hire to those property owners looking for help in removing these weeds.

This project is being lead by the landing directors B K Turner, Phil Marquill, Gary Calhoun and Tom Webb with the support of Dave Sheets and Joe Tynan with the critical support of 15 to 20 volunteers from the Wawasee High School – FFA program and another 10-plus property owners from Bigler’s and Black’s landings.

The cleanup day is set for May 19 in conjunction with the LTPO Lake Clean UP Day. This project will start at 9 a.m. and run to about 11:30 a.m., followed by a cook-out for the FFA volunteers and all the landing supporters. This cook-out celebration will be hosted by Bigler’s and Black’s landing property owners.
