Former County Councilwoman Kathryn M. Teel died at 4:10 a.m. this morning at Miller's Merry Manor, Plymouth.
Teel, 88, served on the council 16 years, from 1984 through 2000, as an at-large candidate. She was county treasurer from 1972 to 1980.
County Council President Harold Jones said Teel was a leader in the county.
"She was a great lady," Jones said. "We had become good friends and I certainly will miss her."
A Bourbon High School graduate, Teel began working in the county clerk's office in 1960 under former clerks Pauline Jordan and Ethna Scott. In 1991 she worked for Bodkin Abstract Company. In November 1963 she worked in the county auditor's office, working under former auditors Noble Blocker and Lawrence Butts.
Following the two terms she served as treasurer, she was an investment deputy clerk in the treasurer's office under former treasurer Vickie Patterson, and returned to the auditor's office under former auditor Jean Northenor and J.D. Geiger.
Teel was a member of the Kosciusko County Women's Club; president of the Warsaw Business and Professional Women's Club; District 2 BPW treasurer; and a member of the Mentone United Methodist Church. She also served as a precinct committeeman and vice committeeman in Franklin 1.
She and her husband, John, were life-long residents of the Bourbon and Mentone areas. Their son Gary is a teacher at Whitko Middle School and a coach at Tippecanoe Valley High School.
Funeral services are pending at King Memorial Home, Mentone. A complete obituary will appear in Saturday's Times-Union.
