NORTH MANCHESTER - Lois H. Sherman, 94, of North Manchester, died at 4 a.m. Dec. 2, 2009, in Timbercrest Healthcare Center, North Manchester.
She was born Oct. 18, 1915, in Goshen, to J. Abe and Zura Hess Neff. On March 30, 1935, she married Orville J. Sherman, who died May 11, 2000.
She was a member of Liberty Mills Church of the Brethren, Church Women United and Home Economic Club, Goshen. She served with the Heifer Project International, Venezuela, from 1948-49; in Greece for the Church World Service from 1955-57; was a bookkeeper for National Offices of the Crop Program from 1953-54; and as assistant administrator under her husband for the Mexico, Ind., Church of the Brethren Home from 1960-68. In 1968 the Church of the Brethren moved the Mexico home to North Manchester, and established what is now Timbercrest Senior Living Community, where she served as assistant administrator until retirement in 1979. She has also worked with the Elkhart Co. Agents Office as home economics director and in charge of 4-H records. She has worked with the Farm Bureau for five years preparing taxes for farmers. She had been a 4-H leader for nine years in Elkhart County and served as a baking and sewing judge for other county 4-H fairs.
Surviving are a daughter, J. Sophia Sherman, Warsaw; two brothers, William Neff, New Paris, and Philip Neff, Goshen; a sister, Iris (and spouse Ted) Hanes, Claypool; a brother-in-law, Lowell Anglin, Nappanee; and two grandchildren, Matt (and spouse Carlye) Overmyer, Kodiak, Ark., and Brett (and spouse Jenelle) Overmyer, Warsaw. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Bonnie Lehman and Betty Anglin.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Timbercrest Chapel, 2201 East St., North Manchester, with Pastor Kelly Beutler officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Violett Cemetery, Goshen.
Calling is from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at McKee Mortuary, 1401 Ind. 114W, North Manchester, and two hours prior to the service Sunday at Timbercrest Chapel.
