An 1850 log house will have a new home on the Kosciusko County Fairgrounds thanks to a collaboration between the Back to the Days of Kosciuszko committee, the fair board, the Kosciusko County Community Foundation, the donors of the log house and many volunteers.
The house was donated by the Koenig family of Fort Wayne. It was disassembled by volunteers and moved to the fairgrounds by G&G Hauling, who donated their services. Reconstruction of the house should be complete dthis summer. The Kosciusko County Community Foundation granted $4,000 toward reconstruction costs.
Once reassembled, the log house will be used to demonstrate 18th-century crafts and skills for area fourth-grade students, will be used during the annual Back to the Days living presentations and by the fairgrounds for old-fashioned weddings and other theme-oriented special events.
The Back to the Days committee and the fair board hope the house will be the first of several period buildings in a frontier village setting.
Civic projects are just one of several areas the Community Foundation takes grants in throughout Kosciusko County. Other grant areas include education, scholarship, arts and culture, health, human services, recreation and the environment.
