Third-year Warsaw girls track and field coach Paul Boyd knows that South Bend Adams is heavily favored to win today's Bremen Regional.
At this point in the season, Boyd is just worried about advancing as many girls to the state meet as possible. He has advanced athletes to the state meet in the previous two seasons.
"South Bend Adams is ranked second in the state," Boyd said. "Plymouth and Kokomo are good, but Adams is a pretty darn good team. At this point, I would be more excited moving people to the state meet. Anything beyond that is just gravy."
Seven local schools will be represented at today's Bremen Regional, Warsaw leads the way with athletes in 10 events. Action gets underway at 6 p.m.
"We're running very well right now," Boyd said. "We're running a lot faster than we were at the beginning of the season. A lot of the teams we've run against haven't improved as much as we have."
The top three teams or individuals, as well as those who meet the state standard, advance to the state meet June 1 in Indianapolis.
Warsaw, which also finished runner-up to Northridge in the Northern Lakes Conference, won three events at the sectional meet.
The 3200 relay team of Kim Kurosky, Jessica Wehrly, Chelsea Boyd and Rachel Rondeau took first, as did Kurosky in the high jump and Claire Beckett in the 200.
The Tigers will also be represented in the 100 (Kim Love), 1600 (Hillary Barlow), 400 relay (Ashley Kitchens, Amy Robertson, Love, Beckett), 400 (Rondeau), high jump (Kurosky), discus (Heather Walenga), 3200 (Barlow) and 1600 relay (Jill Wehrly, Robertson, Rondeau, Beckett).
Manchester and Tippecanoe Valley, which competed in the Rochester Sectional, also will be well represented at the Bremen Regional.
Manchester advanced in seven events, led by Ann Harms, who will compete in the 100 and 300 hurdles as well as the 400 relay. Lydia Flora will compete in three events as well for the Squires - the 1600, 3200 and 3200 relay. Tina French will run in the 100 for Manchester.
Senior Lynette Wilcox will compete in two individual events for Tippecanoe Valley - the 200 and the long jump. She also will be a part of the 400 and 1600 relay teams. The Vikings also will compete in the 3200 (Laura Lash), 100 hurdles (Emily Weaver), high jump (Amber Drudge, Rebekah Parker), 1600 relay (Weaver, Wilcox, Sarah Kindig, Beth Leckrone) and the 400 relay (Holly Green, Leckrone, Weaver, Wilcox).
Triton will be represented in five events, while Wawasee and Whitko will be represented in two and one, respectively.
