Locals Advance To State Track Meet

Posted
BREMEN – Warsaw won just one event in Tuesday’s girls track and field regional at Bremen High School, but team depth allowed the Lady Tigers to finish fourth among the 31 teams that scored points.
“We had girls in 12 (of the 16) events,” said Warsaw coach Scott Erba. “That gave us a lot opportunities to score points.”
South Bend Adams scored 66 points and won its first regional championship since 2005, while St. Joe was second with 54 points, Penn was third with 51 points and Warsaw fourth with 49 points.
“We had a lot of good and very good performances,” said Erba. “At a meet like this, when you’re trying to get to state, you need outstanding performances.”
Culver Girls Academy, led by a pair of record-breaking performances from senior distance runner Waverly Neer, rounded out the top five by scoring 39 points.
Among other local teams, Triton finished 16th by scoring 12 points, Tippecanoe Valley was 25th with five points and Wawasee finished 29th with four points.
Manchester had competitors in the regional but did not score any points.
The top three finishers, as well as those who met the state standard time, height or distance, from Tuesday’s regional advance to the state meet on June 4 at Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex at Indiana University in Bloomington.
Area competitors won two events and advanced in a total of three events.
Warsaw’s 3,200 relay team of Brooke Kline, Hannah Cutshall, Anna Bearss and Ashley Erba won the meet’s first race in a time of 9:34.40, finishing nearly four seconds ahead of the runner-up quartet from conference rival Northridge.
The Lady Tigers were seeded No. 1 based on their sectional time, and backed that up by finishing nine seconds better than their sectional-championship time from last week.
“We had the No. 1 seed in the 4x800, and we were confident they’d get out,” said Erba. “They ran a great race, finished better than their sectional time, and won a regional championship.”
Warsaw will also be represented at the state meet in the discus and the 1,600.
Lauren Burish, who won the sectional championship last week, finished second at the regional with a personal-best distance of 119-9.
Triton’s Megan Howdeshell won the discus competition with a throw of 126-1.
Erba, who anchored the 3,200 relay team and also finished fourth in the 3,200, advanced in the 1,600 with a third-place time of 5:12.82.
The individual distance events belonged to Neer, who got a standing ovation after she shattered a second regional record by winning the 3,200 in a time of 10:24.66, nearly a minute ahead of runner-up Skylair Hilton of Northridge.
The previous record of 10:44.05 was set by CGA’s Alex Banfich in 2008.
Neer’s record-breaking time of 4:50.23 in the 1,600 broke the previous mark of 4:57.60 set in 1993 by Triton’s Justina Reichert.
In all, there were four records set and another tied at Tuesday’s meet.
