More than 22,903 registered voters in Kosciusko County did not vote Tuesday.
Of the 40,642 who did register, only 17,739 voted. That accounts for 43.65 percent.
According to the Associated Press, about 63 percent of registered Hoosiers statewide voted in the 1982 mid-term election, but voter turnout hasn't reached 60 percent since then. It was 56 percent in 1986 and 57 percent in 1990. Kosciusko County is below that.
In 1994, the Associated Press reports that 54 percent of the state's 2,976,255 voters went to the polls.
For those who did vote during this mid-term election, they cited the fact that they did so because it was an American duty to vote.
"I just try to vote everytime," said David Zellmer of Warsaw.
Norma Faurote, Warsaw, said, "I think it's our duty as an American citizen."
Burl Faurote of Warsaw said that he has voted ever since he was 18 years old. "We just always vote," he said.
Zellmer said, "I try to watch what the people have to say. I used to vote straight ticket, but now I don't. I try to look at the issues."
The Republicans swept most of the county in the elections. Republican Chairman Mike Miner said, "We have a strong Republican county."
