Local Track Teams Compete At Indoor Qualifying Meet

MARION — The Warsaw, Wawasee and Whitko track and field teams competed at Saturday’s Hoosier State Qualifier at Indiana Wesleyan University. A number of qualifying meets are held all over the state until March 15, with athletes competing to earn a spot in the March 22 state finals at Indiana Wesleyan. In their first competition of the season, the Warsaw boys had three first-place finishes, including its 4x200 relay (1:35.75), its 4x400 relay (3:34.40) and Seth Fouts in the shot put (50-5). From Wawasee, Clayton Cook won the 60-meter hurdles (8.38) and was third in the 60-meter sprint (7.21), while J.J. Gilmer won the high jump (6-4) and finished third in the long jump (20-7.5). On the girls side, Warsaw’s 4x800 relay was first (10:17.82), as was its 4000 Distance Medley Relay (13:41.34) and Claire Hickerson had the top height in the pole vault, clearing 10-0. Warsaw will be off until the March 22 state finals, while Wawasee will compete at another qualifier Saturday at Trine University and Whitko will be at Churubusco March 20 for the Whitley County Invitational.
