Local Swimmers Headline Roundup By Advancing From NLC Prelims

MIDDLEBURY – Warsaw’s Brenna Morgan won twice, in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle races in the preliminary round of the girls Northern Lakes Conference Swimming Championships Thursday. Wawasee had a dozen swimmers qualify for Saturday’s semifinals and finals, while the Lady Tigers qualified seven. Wawasee’s Breanna Robinson qualified for the semifinals in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, Kayla Hershberger in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, Hannah Winters in the 500 freestyle and 100 breaststroke Other Lady Warriors moving to the semifinals are Paige Miller in the 200-yard individual medley and 500 freestyle, Anna Park and Caitlin Clevenger in the 200 IM and 500 freestyle, Mikala Mawhorter in the 50 freestyle, Kendra Miller in the 50 and 100 freestyle, Meghan Fretz in the 50 and 100 freestyle, Shelby Adams in the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, Madison McBride in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke, and Lizzy Brugh in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly.. Savannah Taylor of the Lady Tigers qualified in the 200 IM and the 500 freestyle, Erin Sandberg in the 100 butterfly and 500 freestyle, Allison Thompson in the 100 butterfly, Jess Haines in the 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke, Lauren Kuhl in the 100 backstroke, with Karly Poyner and Lauren Moeller qualifying in the 100 breaststroke. Wrestling Thursday in Bourbon Triton’s wrestling team beat John Glenn 51-22 in the Trojan Trench Thursday evening. The Trojans had 10 individual winners in the matchup; Bryce Swihart at 106 pounds, Malachi Greene at 113, R. Chickering at 120, L. Mullett at 126, Grant Stichter at 152, Nate Spangle at 152, J. Salinas at 182, T. Jones at 195 and B. DeBouza at 220. The wrestlers will compete in the Bremen Super Duals at 8 a.m. Saturday. TRITON 51, JOHN GLENN 22 106 pounds – B. Thursday in Elkhart Tristin Ponsler was the lone winner for Wawasee’s wrestling team in a 56-6 team loss to Elkhart Memorial. Ponsler pinned his opponent, Marcos Mejia, The Warriors travel to Kokomo to compete in the Western Super Duals, with the meet beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Thursday in Marion Manchester’s wrestling team dropped a match to Eastbrook, 30-21. Winners for the Squires were Trey Addair (126 pounds), Clayton Moore (138), Jared Gable (145), Ryan Kendall (152) and Landon Tharp (182). The Squires will host Wabash at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, making up a match postponed from Jan. 8.
Thursday in Goshen Warsaw narrowly lost to Goshen, 35-32, Thursday night. Tiger winners were Jeremy Lee (132), Spencer Gareiss (152);, Mason Faas (160), Rory Nolin (195), Anthony Penn (285), Alec Hammel (113) and Kyle Hatch (120). Hatch ran his record to 26-0 on the season. The Tigers return to the mat at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Garrett Invitational.
Gymnastics Thursday in Huntertown Wawasee lost a close meet with Carroll, 103.076 to 92.160, Thursday evening. Lady Warrior Reagan Atwood finished first on the vault, fourth on the uneven bars and fifth on the balance beam. Taylor Busse took fourth in the uneven bars and fifth on the vault. The Lady Warriors will host West Noble on Tuesday.
