Bryce Durgin represented Kosciusko County Saturday in the 49th annual Journal Gazette Spelling Bee in Fort Wayne. He placed fifth in the area finals among the 17 county representatives from northeastern Indiana and northwestern Ohio, spelling words that included "gordian," "sonorous" and "incoherently" before misspelling "crith" in the 14th round.
After asking for the language of origin for his final word, Durgin asked the pronouncer to define it. It was defined as the weight of one liter of hydrogen.
Kevin Weingartner of Memorial Park Middle School in Allen County won the bee with the correct spelling of "numismatics."
Durgin is an eighth-grader at Edgewood Middle School in Warsaw and the son of Susan and Robert Durgin of Winona Lake. Durgin's father is currently deployed to the Marine Corps Central Command in Bahrain in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
