Two area high school seniors have been named college-sponsored Merit Scholars for 2001.
Eleanor F. Wehner, of Manchester High School, North Manchester, was awarded a scholarship from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Terre Haute, where she plans to pursue a degree in computer engineering.
Wehner is a two-year member of National Honor Society and a member of district and state solo and ensemble county honors band, jazz band and science club, and was on the Academic Super Bowl team.
Kimberly M. Keyes, of Warsaw Community High School, received a Merit Scholarship from Taylor University, Upland, where she will major in English education.
Keyes is the salutatorian for the WCHS class of 2001. She is a two-year member of National Honor Society, was on the Academic Super Bowl team, was active in drama club and productions at WCHS and was named to the state all-star cast.
College-sponsored Merit Scholars receive between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study. The recipients are selected by the college they plan to attend, and their selection is based on their outstanding academic record, high school recommendations, test performance and an essay.
