Local Schools, Library Get Internet Grants

Posted

Warsaw Community Schools and the Warsaw Community Public Library are the recipients of grants from the Universal Service Fund for Schools and Libraries (also known as the E-Rate).

WCS' grant was for $122,223.30, and the WCPL grant was $4,868.05.

The purpose of the grants, said Chris Mehl, press secretary for Congressman Tim Roemer, is to help schools and libraries expand educational opportunities by connecting to the Internet.

Mehl said the funds will be used mostly to update phone services for Internet use.

The E-Rate also provides discounts on the cost of phone service.

The grants are part of approximately $2 million in grants in Roemer's district, Mehl said. WCS and WCPL are the only two entities in Kosciusko County to receive the grants.

The E-Rate program was created by the Telecommunications Act of 1996 and provides discounts to public schools and libraries on telecommunications services.
