The American Red Cross continues its relief operation to provide food, shelter, supplies and comfort to people affected by Hurricane Sandy.

To date, the Kosciusko, Elkhart, St. Joe, Porter and LaPorte chapters of the American Red Cross have deployed 47 volunteers, which is half of the total number of Red Cross deployments in Indiana.

Local chapters have nearly two dozen more volunteers on stand by, ready to be deployed once new assignments are received from Red Cross National Headquarters.

In addition, more than 55 community members region-wide have been recently trained in order to deploy to help those affected by the storms.

American Red Cross chapters regularly train community members who are interested in responding to local or national disasters. Additional trainings are scheduled throughout the region in the coming week.
