Tony Robinson and other competitors at Saturday's Pumpkin Hurl in Warsaw learned one thing: Pumpkins can fly just fine in frigid, wind-whipped temperatures.
Robinson and his father, Leon, were the grand prize winners in the first local Pumpkin Hurl, sponsored by Bowen Center and a handful of other companies.
The father-son combo created a mechanical contraption that flung a pumpkin 170 feet, 9 inches. The mechanical hurler was devised solely of parts from Safe-Way Door company, according to Leon.
Despite wind chill temperatures of about 15 degrees, the event attracted more than 100 people and about six other groups sporting mechanical devices specifically designed for hurling.
Grand prize was a guitar provided by a Fort Wayne rock station.
The event also included human hurls for children and adults.
